It appears to be another ordinary Saturday, but things are rarely as they seem...

Another Saturday has come. You look up into the morning sky and know that there is a miracle happening here, but it feels just beyond reach. You know this day is a gift, that this life could be taken at any moment, but still there is a sense that something is missing. There is a longing that is burning inside you.

But friends, things are rarely as they seem.

Love is taking shape as your hands as you lay them on your heart, as you take just one sacred pause to allow in what is really happening here. It is what is looking out through your eyes as you open wide to the fragile beauty of this world. It is flooding through your cells and your DNA when you take the risk that is always required to open yourself to another, knowing what could happen if you do. It is emerging out of the walls and the floors as you offer yourself as a holding environment for yourself and others when everything is falling apart. It is dripping out of the sky as you wade into the darkness with a grieving friend, an abandoned partner, a depressed co-worker. It is raging in the anxiety of the person sitting in front of you, and hidden in the cracks of your own loneliness, confusion, and fear. It is alive.

When you see that the beloved is always at work, even inside the darkness, your life will never again be the same. Love is not asking you to heal, to transform, to awaken, or change. It needs you exactly as you are. It has not come into your life to maintain things the way they were; to keep everything safe, certain, and predictable; or to protect you from your brokenness. It has come to initiate a revolution inside you. For it is only through this revolution that the sacredness and the magic of this world can be unleashed.

Your unlived life is always appearing before you

What is it that you have disowned in yourself? What is it that you will avoid feeling at all costs? What parts of you have you relegated into the shadows?

When you were a little boy or girl it was intelligent to split off from overwhelming experience and pieces of yourself that you could not integrate at the time. But these pieces are looking for you. They only want to show you their light and their wisdom, and be allowed back inside. They will continue to search for you, and will appear as your friends, your children, your lovers, your life circumstances, and even in the bird song that you hear in the morning. Look carefully as your unlived life is always appearing before you. Things here are rarely what they seem.

Love will find you if you will allow it, if you will take the risk of your heart breaking; and never, ever being put back together again.

For in your falling apart a new heart is born

Be willing to feel more
And to feel even more than that
Open to your vulnerability
And to be even more vulnerable than that
There is no need to hold it together any longer
For in your falling apart a new heart is born

It is only through you, as you are, that love can re-order this world

There is a deep longing to be seen, as the one who is “awakened,” the one who is invulnerable, the spiritual one, the one who has it all together, the one who is not falling apart, the one not broken.

But, friends, who and what you are is irreplaceable; it is only through you, as you are, that love can re-order this world. If you change the essence of you, love will be lost: the stars will fall out of the sky, the oceans will dry up, the moon will disappear.

Love has no interest in whether you are “awakened” or whether you’ve completed some sort of mythical journey from here to there. It is only interested in your burning. For it is only through your burning that it may craft you as a translucent vessel through which it can move in this dimension.

Will you provide a home for the guests of your heart?

Another Tuesday has arrived; a new week has been given. Who are you? Who will you be? It is not clear yet. Are you broken? Are you at peace? Are you raw and tender? Are you awakened? Are you feeling down? Are you content? Are you bored? Are you anxious? Are you excited? Are you sad? Are you lonely? Are you in bliss?

Friend, you are none of these. You are the infinite and creative space in which all of these come and go. What you are will never come and go.

Will you provide a home for these guests on this new day, even the unwanted ones? For they deserve a home also. Will you allow yourself to be penetrated by these messengers from beyond? Will you take them in as intimate lovers? Will you hold them close? For each one has been specially designed to show you something very important about the nature of love.

The Genuine Heart of Sadness

One of my very favorite passages on the awakened heart from the ever-provocative and brilliant Chogyam Trungpa:

If you search for awakened heart, if you put your hand through your rib cage and feel for it, there is nothing there except for tenderness. You feel sore and soft, and if you open your eyes to the rest of the world, you feel tremendous sadness. This kind of sadness doesn’t come from being mistreated. You don’t feel sad because someone has insulted you or because you feel impoverished. Rather, this experience of sadness is unconditioned. It occurs because your heart is completely exposed. There is no skin or tissue covering it; it is pure raw meat. Even if a tiny mosquito lands on it, you feel so touched. Your experience is raw and tender and so personal.

… this experience of sad and tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness… it comes from letting the world tickle your heart, your raw and beautiful heart. You are willing to open up, without resistance or shyness, and face the world. You are willing to share your heart with others.

I find myself recommending Rinpoche's books a lot lately, to many different people, for many different reasons. His series on the path of warriorship (here and here), and his original talks on Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism and The Myth of Freedom have stood the test of time, and in my opinion are still some of the most inspired teachings around. My personal favorite, though it requires falling into the unknown to understand (read slowly) is Orderly Chaos, Rinpoche's discussion of the mandala principle in tantra.
